加利福尼亞蒙特利灣，Karen Hatch和Giancarlo Thomae劃著小皮艇進行找鯨魚一日遊，沒想到他們遇到的事情遠遠超出他們的預料。一個足有40英尺(12.19公尺)長，36噸重的大家伙在他們的皮艇附近浮出水面。遭遇座頭鯨的時，他們距離海岸3英里(4.8公里)。

根據球網報導，Karen說：『它們嗅著我的氣味，聽著我的聲音，看著我，在我的下方很快地穿梭著，當時我都嚇蒙了，不知道怎麼辦。』她的心跳得很快，這是她一生中最驚悚的時刻。

『我非常敬畏它們對生活環境的敏感性，它們在水下巡航著，沒有攻擊我，保持著對生活環境的警惕。』

海洋生物學家Giancarlo拍下了這一刻，他說：『我們划著皮艇去看鯨魚，鯨魚真的出現了。作為這個星球上最大的動物，它們實在很優雅。座頭鯨好奇心重愛玩，對划皮艇和划船的人都很友好——雖然有時太友好了。』

鳳尾魚群把這些鯨魚吸引到了蒙特利灣。他說：『當我拿相機拍的時候差點嚇尿了——我不知道當時Karen怎麼想——回到岸上時我知道我拍的照片絕對是張好照片。』

Giancarlo說那次出海共見到了15隻座頭鯨，是今年在該地區見到鯨魚最多的一次。
